Snowscapes : Black and White

Image
Check me out on social media  Instagram  and  Facebook  !  Winter just started here in Michigan with good amount of snow already on the ground. I'm combining all my snow landscapes shots over the years to showcase the beauty of the snow covered land. It just feels so serene and calm, of course hiking through the woods to shoot pictures felt exactly the opposite! I prefer shooting the snow covered in landscapes in black and white and mostly on film because B&W removes all the distractions and film cameras hold up better with no electronics in the cold! Enjoy!

Travel Journal : Zurich, Switzerland

Image
Check me out on social media  Instagram  and  Facebook  ! Switzerland is beautiful! We visited Zurich and surrounding areas. One the first day, we took a boat trip on lake Lucerne. The landscapes are awe inspiring and the journey is very peaceful. On second day, we got the top of mount Pilatus. The journey to the top is very pretty, with many photographic opportunity.  Enjoy the postcards! Mount Pilatus Lake Lucerne Way to the top - Mount Pilatus Lake Lucerne Lake Lucerne

Travel Journal : Zion and Bryce

Image
Check me out on social media  Instagram  and  Facebook  ! I have been to Zion and Bryce national parks twice so far. They are absolutely gorgeous and it's difficult to shoot a bad pictures there! They are massive and each park needs a few days to truly explore it. Zion has other surrounding areas like Wire Pass and Toadstools that are also very picturesque. Travel Journal : Alaska

Image
Check me out on social media  Instagram  and  Facebook  ! I've been meaning to write a blurb about the Alaska trip. Finally getting to it now! We did the Alaska trip in 2017 and it was truly an amazing experience. We visited Fairbanks, Denali National Park, Anchorage, Kenai Fjords and surrounding areas. The whole state is very picturesque. Mount Denali is truly majestic and we were lucky to catch a glimpse of the peak (apparently it's not easy to see the peak as there is usually a cloud cover). I found the food scene in Alaska to be surprisingly good! Some pictures from Denali National Park and scenic drives near Seward and Anchorage.

Basement Photography Studio Setup

Image
I wanted to have a basement photo studio for a while now. This winter made it clear to me that I needed  to set it up so that I won't go the whole winter without doing photography. That would have been depressing. Initially I thought I'd have just one setup with black background but since I owned two different setups I decided to go with one white and one black background. They are not fancy but they do the job well. I hope I can do studio portraits till it gets nice outside! Here are the setup pictures. The Infinite black background with White Lightning X1600s The White background with Nikon SB28 and Olympus FL50R These are simple setups anyone can do in their basement/spare room. My basement is unfinished so there is no heat so I had to use the space heater to keep the area warm (not very effective unfortunately). I moved most of studio stuff downstairs so I have ready access to various light modifiers, reflectors etc. A few things that I ne

Return to Film Photography

Image
When most people transitioned from film to digital, I returned to shooting film. Like most photographers I started photography with film and was comfortable with 35mm photography. I did get a digital camera when those became affordable and eventually landed in dSLR land. After shooting digital for a few years, I was beginning to get the feeling that I was burning out with my photography. I wanted to do something different, away from pixel world. I got an excellent deal on a medium format camera and bought it. It was a Mamiya RZ67 ProII (pictured below). I loved the big negatives the medium format camera produces. It was a world of a difference from my 35mm days. After looking at some 6x7 slides, I was convinced that film photography is what I need to pursue again mainly in bigger formats. Since then I have acquired several cameras... Hasselblad, Rolleiflex, Sinar F2, Speed Graphic 4x5 and even a Holga.

Reviving a Dead Blog

Okay so my blog was mostly dead. I was cleaning up my bookmarks in Safari, found the old link to the blog and thought I'd try to revive it. I don't know how frequently can I blog but sure will make an attempt to update it. It was weird reading what had written four years ago and compare it with my current photography philosophy.  Certainly a lot of things have changed, I got back to film and have been mostly shooting medium and large formats. I will add more posts about those. Also in general I have figured what I like shooting and what makes me happy in photography. So watch for it!

The Tools of the Trade : Photography!

Image
Recently a few people have asked me what gear I use, especially for the lighting part. Today I was organizing all my gear and I thought why not take pictures of them(okay, I was tempted to take pictures of them :D). So this is a gear post :). Click on the images to view large on flickr. White Lighting Kit - Recently I ordered some stuff from PC Buff. I was happy with my small flash kit. But I wasn't getting enough power at times and I hate to pump up the ISO. So I got the big lights, since I don't have a studio, I ordered a vegabond battery too. May be I need one more battery, so that each flash head gets dedicated battery... although a single battery can support up to 6 heads (WL tech spec :)). I also got Large Octobox and Beauty dish with grid and soft cover. I love the light output by WLs, when mounted on Octobox. Shadow areas are very soft and overall pleasing look. Then I have the 20deg grid which sort of gives a funky look. I am yet to put some color gels on flash he
